3D Viewing Information - Mon.2017.03.30 - Jeff Setterholm, Lakeville MN,U.S.A. jeff.setterholm@gmail.com ----------------------------------- Images and movies from a "Fujifilm Finepix Real 3D W3" camera. A source: CostCo-online ~ $270. in mid 2012. (including: 1 battery & an 8.gb memory card.) This digital camera takes 3D (stereo) images. The camera's 3D images have the extension ".mpo". The camera's 3D movies have the extension ".avi". One of the two 3D images is also written to the corresponding ".jpg" image. At highest resolution - each eye's view is a 10 megapixel color image. The camera itself has a 3" wide color flat screen on the back which has a lenticular lens enabling direct 3D viewing of images & movies. The 3D .avi files will play back in 2D on ordinary home computers. The camera includes an HDMI video output. Reportedly 3D TV's can allow you to directly view ".mpo" & ".avi" files in 3D. ****************************************************************** I convert the the 3D ".mpo" file into: 1. A normal 3D full color stereo-Pair images "-LR.jpg" where the LR stands for "Left/Right" (uncrossed) images. 2. A crossed-eye 3D full color stereo-pair images "-RL.jpg" where the RL stands for "Right/Left"... crossed images, & 3. A (Red):(Green+Blue) 3D image - viewed with (Red):(Cyan) glasses. = "-RedGB3D.jpg" creating an enhanced anaglyph. ... see http://ftp.setterholm.com/Images/Red-GreenBlue3D.pdf Both the -LR.jpg images and the -RL.jpg images can be given ".jps" extensions and then be directly viewed on 3D TV's without any other changes. CROSSED-EYE 3D works OK for ~ half the population after a bit of training. ~ Three-quarters of the population is able to lock onto RedGB3D quickly; For RedGB3D images: I'm using "hand-held Paper 3D viewers" from American Paper Optics LLC (901-381-1515) with anaglyphic Red/Cyan Filters in plain white frames (Item:AGRCHHV - $102.50 for 250, including shipping & handling =$.41 each.) ****************************************************************** The technology for making 3D hardcopies is called "lenticular printing". I have NOT ordered any 3D prints from anyone yet. One of the few companies on the web that quotes a price for single-copy lenticular prints is: "Snap 3D" www.snap3d.com - web 200 Silverbirch Ave. 416-690-0377 - phone Toronto, ON M4E 3L5 Canada info@snap3d.com - email 179 LPI lenticular photo emulsion material Size Cost for first copy Cost for additonal copies 4"H X 6"W $9.90/print $7.90 8"H X 6"W $18.00/print $14.00 ****************************************************************** I sent these images to two different people who both report that: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stphmkr has a free application called "stphmkre.exe" - "Stereo Photo Maker" which allows you to pan and zoom the ".mpo" using CROSSED-EYE 3D viewing. ****************************************************************** Camera usage notes: 1. It is taking me awhile to learn to keep my fingers completely out of view of both of the lenses, particularly when taking 3D movies. 2. I carry two spare batteries for the camera, which has worked out very well. (Battery life ends with very little advance warning.) 3. I upgraded to a 32gb class 10 SanDisk SDHC memory card (~ $50.00) which works well & is projected to store ~ 2100 3D images. (The camera's manual advises use of class 6 or better.) //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// 4. For many years I thought that 3D depth perception was very limited beyond 20 feet - because of geometric limitations caused by human eyes being ~ 2.5 inches apart. However... Zooming into this camera's 3D images reveals a startling amount of depth out beyond 50 feet. Eye RESOLUTION was the limiting factor, rather than eye-spacing-geometry! Exploit that in your auto, robot, UAV, &/or spacecraft 3D/6DOF passive rendezvous & tracking systems! Also: inter-image object correlation within traditonal stereo pairs is likely to simplify as the range increases. I use the camera's "Auto" mode and "A3D" mode almost exclusively. As time goes on, I am ever-more-appreciative of how well the "Auto" mode functions. FujiFilm's W3 is a superb 3D camera !!! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
