Jeff's Remarks at Grace Setterholm's Memorial Service On October 19, 2001 @ St.John's Lutheran Church Lakeville, Minnesota 55044 Thank you all for being here in God's presence: Friends and relatives, Pastor Von Fischer, Catherine, Shirley, and the ladies of the church. I was blessed to have Grace and Vernon as my parents. There's more to say than time to say it... to I'm going to talk about American English. Grace loved the positive things that language can do. She majored in English at the University of Minnesota, but that was a consequence, not the beginning, of her love of language. There were numerous, imaginative, stories that she wrote in her youth. She rarely let a pun go unspoken. When Ogden Nash published his book of poetry, she was like a prospector who had found gold. One of his poems - that Grace delighted in - was: If called by a Panther, don't anther. Scrabble and Jotto were her perennial favorites as games. In all the time that I was growing up, I never heard her speak a demeaning word about anyone. By the things that she said to me, there was never any doubt in my mind that she loved me. most of you received postcard and letters from Grace over the years... and already know... that Grace was a great Mom who loved the positive things that language can do. Thank you, Lord. Amen
